Coastal fun in Fairbourne and Barmouth

Days out and about in the mountains is great, but sometimes you want a slower day with a difference.

How about a little trip to the seaside? This is a brilliant mix of nostalgia, movement and sea air - a great option if you’re after a low-effort day with maximum scenery.

  1. Start your day at Morfa Mawddach. Off the A493, 7.8 miles from Plas Isa towards Fairbourne, as you have passed a row of houses in Arthog - you’ll see a signpost for the Train Station Morfa Mawddach. Please be aware this is a narrow lane to your right.

This car park is free of charge and has public toilets.

  2. Park the car and walk to the train platform. From here you’ll have wide views over to Mawddach estuary.

  3. Walk to the end of the platform, go through the metal gate and join the Mawddach Trail for a few yards.

  4. Cross the railway line and follow the signs for the Wales Coast Path & Fairbourne Golf course.

  5. At the end of the path, when you come to a t-junction with a road, turn left - go past the clubhouse of the golf course, a row of houses and at the Penrhyn Bar & Grill turn left in to Beach Road. To your right, you’ll find Fairbourne Railway

  6. The little steam train will take you from Fairbourne Village to the Barmouth Ferry - a little fishing boat will take you in a few minutes across the Mawddach Estuary to the harbour of Barmouth.

  7. Barmouth has some great independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Perhaps you would like a little go in the Arcades. Rather seek a bit of peace and quiet - a stroll on the long sandy beach is waiting for you.

  8. And when you’re ready to head home, cross back over the old wooden Barmouth Railway bridge and you’re back at the car.
