What our guests say about Dolgellau

We love it when our guests come back to Dolgellau

and this is one of the reasons why…

Dolgellau a town in North Wales, is leisurely 3 1/2-hour drive from our home. We have been coming to Dolgellau and staying Plas Isa for the last two years to walk in the spectacular landscape in which Dolgellau is situated.

I first came to Dolgellau in the mid 80s and one thing I can definitely say is that it has not lost any of its interest as a small market town. It's a great place to stay while exploring this stunning part of North Wales. For us, this is a chance to have a slow staycation, taking time to experience the wonderful mix of ancient woodlands, mountains and the beautiful Mawddach estuary with its shifting sands, water, light and great bird life. There are many walks you can go on nearby giving vantage points of the Estuary. This time we chose the Panorama walk above Barmouth part of which give a fabulous view of the Mawddach.

Dolgellau has a very interesting history of its own, and this time, late May, we had fun walking around the town with a local history book matching old photos to still present buildings; charting the changes that have taken place over the centuries in the buildings that are still standing. The buildings reflect the place they are in and are made of massive granite stone blocks, which leave you wondering and respecting the builders all those centuries ago who built the thick walls with basic tools and equipment.

Back to the present...

The town itself has places to shop if you are catering for yourself, and many eateries and a really great coffee place at TH Roberts, if like me you are a coffee lover. It's as good as any coffee place in a city! There is a well-equipped outdoor shop just in case you forgot some essential equipment.

There is something about being based in a town. Towns are on a human scale people talk with each other and have the time and space to welcome visitors. Dolgellau is not primarily a tourist town. That makes it even more special. In Dolgellau you can relax and feel at home. Once you visit, you'll want to come back.
