Report from Cader Idris Weekend 23rd and 24th September 2023

Ready for a day on Cader Idris

Hike Cader Idris Weekend, the second walking event organised from Plas Isa, saw a small group of 8 guests and Chris our mountain leader enjoy two days hiking around Dolgellau. It should have been two days up and down Cader but Mother Nature intervened.

Saturday 23rd September

After breakfast, at round 9.30AM, Cader Cabs picked us up and took us to Dol Idris carpark. From here began climb up Cader Idris . The weather was great for this time of year and the group was roaring to go.

We followed the Minffordd Path up to Llyn Cau and further around to Pen y Gader, the summit of Cader Idris. After a rest and lunch stop (with a very curious Ewe that acted more like a dog than a woolly grass eater) we continued along the ridge to Mynnydd Moel and Gau Graig. Most judged it correct and walked on the dryer side of the fence, after Mynedd Moel, but some (well Ian) remained on the wrong side to trudge on through the puddles.

In the evening, we all enjoyed the pizza's and some well deserved drinks at The Stag Inn.

Sunday 24th September

Unfortunately, the weather Gods did not play ball for the Sunday. The weather - very strong winds, forced us to change to Plan B and stay at lower grounds. With so many walking routes in the area to choose from, that was not an issue. After breakfast, some of us took the bus to Arthog and walked up alongside the very impressive Arthog Falls to Cregennan Lakes. We walked sheltered under the trees for a the first hour or so. Once we got out in the open, curiosity as to the actual strength of the wind got the better of us. We took the “risk” and climbed up Pared Cefn Hir to find out. The general consensus was that it was a sensible move not to go up and over Cader Idris!
A gentle walk over the old Drover's Road (aka Roman Road) brought us back to Dolgellau.

“Thank you for the fantastic weekend” “It was a great weekend, even with the aches and pains!” “What a lovely bunch! The walk was amazing with breathtaking views, the jagerbombs no so…”
