15 Things to do on a rainy day

One of the reasons Wales is so lush and green, is the annual rainfall. That is all well and good, but what do you do when the forecast predicts pouring down rain all day, while you are on your holiday? We have listed activities you can all still enjoy without getting (too) wet.

  • Dance in the rain and embrace it - the rivers, streams and waterfalls are spectacular when it rains. So put your waterproofs on and get exploring.

  • Browse our local independent shops and art gallery. In the center of town you find many small independent shops, all worth having a browse. Under the arches, you also find Celf Aran Arts, a cooperative of local artists and crafts people sharing space to showcase their hand-crafted designs.

  • Watch the world go by (slowly) with a lazy coffee and cakes at the many coffee shops around Eldon Square.

  • Go for a swim in the sea or one of the many nearby lakes.

  • Enjoy a pint of Welsh ale or cider in one of the five great pubs in the center of Dolgellau. The friendly locals love a chat and to teach you "dominos - a game of 3’s and 5’s”

  • Explore history of Dolgellau - there are several books in the house that tell the stories of Dolgellau’s history. And if you want to see it, wander around the old street in the center and along the Afon Arran.

  • Catch a film at the Magic Lantern Cinema in Tywyn.

  • Corris Craft Centre is one of the best Craft Centres in Wales with 9 individual craft studios where the resident craftspeople design and make their unique collections.

  • Go underground at Llechwedd - travel over 500 feet into the belly of Llechwedd’s mountain – on the steepest cable railway in Europe!

  • Bounce Below - Unleash your inner-thrill seeker in our enormous underground net adventure! Jump and slide your way through the disused mine on the best playground ever!

Please note, during the winter months, some attractions are closed or have adjusted opening hours.

  • Snuggle up on the couch with a good book from our local bookstore The Sandspout or one of our charity shops

  • What about a walk on the beach at Fairbourne, take the train (Fairbourne Railways) to the mouth of the Mawddach Estuary, where you can catch a ferry to Barmouth!

  • Visit Portmeirion - situated on a private peninsula overlooking stunning coastal scenery, the Italian Riviera meets rural Wales with a riot of colour and architectural styles at Portmeirion Village. Built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion is now one of Wales’ most popular tourist destinations.

  • Let you be taken back in time and catch a steamtrain through the wonderful scenery at Talyllyn Railway or Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways.

  • When was the last time you completed a jigsaw puzzle?
